Creation Station Grand Reopening

Congratulations to the North Platte Public Library on the Grand Reopening of the Creation Station at the Library!

The North Platte Public Library Foundation is proud to help sponsor this important next step in transforming what libraries are to communities.

The Creation Station offers a place for people to use equipment normal citizens do not necessarily have access to and to gain skills needed in this approaching 22nd century. This is not unlike the revolution that brought public computing into libraries nearly four decades ago. People of all ages should be able to learn about older traditions and newer crafts in a creative and welcoming location. We hope these services become as ubiquitous as public computing has today.

So we would like to help the Library celebrate this moment by spreading the word about this wonderful and now permanent new service of the North Platte Public Library.

Fall Living History Tour

Grit and Duds: A Civil War Tour

From April of 1861 until April of 1865, America was embattled in a division of the states over slavery issues, North versus South. After the fighting was over, some soldiers, sailors, and widows who were weary from battle, chose Nebraska Territory to start again and forge a new life. Nebraska officially achieved statehood two years following the end of the Civil War in 1867. Some people who fought on both sides of the Civil War, found themselves neighbors in our community just years later.

This years tour pays tribute to that time when brother fought brother, wives became widows, and mothers became single parents. The living history presentations (each lasting approximately 15 minutes) will tell short stories of nine (9) former citizens in our community who lived or were personally touched by the North versus South fight. The stories will be at different points during, after, and reminiscing about that period of American history known as the American Civil War.

Our actors volunteer their time to present these vignettes of history each year and we thank them heartily. This years actors include:

  • Case Axthelm portraying Edward Dick
  • David Breaker portraying Luther Farrington
  • Michael Davis portraying Reverend Ranna Moore
  • Bill Kackmeister portraying Major Leicester Walker
  • John Kalisch portraying Alonzo Church
  • Suzanne Knolles portraying Rohanna Klein
  • Andrew D. Lee portraying Anthony Ries
  • Teresa Smith portraying Julia Casey
  • Morris Turner portraying Cyrus Fox

Also this year we are welcoming, the City Municipal Band under the direction of Lori Evans. The band will have two performances opening the beginning of each tour with Civil War era music to help set the mood:

Many of you may have heard about the new Creation Station makerspace at the Library. That space is currently equipped through a Library Innovation Studios grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and supported by the Nebraska Library Commission and Regional Library Systems, UNL Innovation Studio, and Nebraska Extension.

This equipment is leaving our Library on January 22, 2019 to travel on to another community library awarded the grant. We have been happy with the community response for this equipment and want to help the Library by fundraising for new permanent equipment for our Creation Station.

There are several ways to donate to this project:

Give to NPPL Foundation on May 2nd

North Platte Giving Day is Wednesday, May 2, 2018. Make your donations at https://northplattegivingday.org.

This year’s donations to NPPL Foundation are earmarked for makerspace equipment and supplies. The North Platte Public Library will be closed May 7 – 23, 2018 for reorganization and to make room for construction of a permanent room to house various equipment. The Library received a grant in 2017 to house nearly $150,000 in equipment starting this September through January to give the community ideas for our makerspace. Then in January / February 2019, the money raised during NP Giving Day 2018 will be used to purchase permanent equipment for the community.

Please watch the video to get an idea of the equipment coming in September 2018 and what it can do.
